Testing, 1,2 3 Is this thing on?

I was sitting on the couch knitting the other day. Sitting there in my usual catatonic state, grumbling the occasional “mmm, knitting” to DH when he insists I “come here for just one second” every 5 minutes. I’ve since learned to ignore these pleas, because all too often I’ve hastily put my project aside only for him to show me something really interesting like a website about fancy boats, or a tv show about gigantic mining equipment (what is with men anyway?) and then come back to find the cats playing “die-pink-string-die”.

Anyway, I digress. The tv is on for background noise and through the blah blah blah I hear a random snippet of a song “ I don’t know why…..”. And to my surprise, I belt out: “she swallowed the flyyyyyy, perhaps she’ll dieeeeee” . I cracked myself up! I can’t believe I remembered that song from my childhood. (Perhaps I should get a hobby that requires more interaction with the human race). Since we have Rhapsody (an on-line music service) I yelled to DH to find that song and play it. Sure enough he found it. Do you remember it?

I know an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don’t know why she swallowed the fly, perhaps she’ll die
I know an old lady who swallowed a spider,

who wriggled, and jiggled and tickled inside her
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,

I don’t know why she swallowed the fly, perhaps she’ll die….

Who knows the rest? (no fair googling!) Which of course got me thinking, we’ve talked about children’s books, but what about songs? I asked my mom and we had a hilarious time remembering songs. She reminded me that one of our most favorites was “You could be swinging on a star” So of course we had to all bust out into song:

And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin' on a star

Be happy you weren’t there to hear it, although it might explain why your dog starting howling about 7:00 EST last night. How about this gem: “Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy, A kid ‘ill eat ivy too, wouldn’t you?”

So, What songs did you most often sing (or have sung to you) when you were little? Points to those who have the most obscure favorites.

Oh, and when you think of them, call the person who used to sing it to you (or had to listen to it too) and sing it to them. Guaranteed giggles. And thanks to all the great comments on the last post. I left you all comments back!

hahah that totally sounds like somethng I would do...start singing a random song like that.

Hmm...the song that comes to mind for me is the bug song.
I hate bugs.
Any kind of bugs
Every kind of bug
Crazy little bugs....
and so on.
Oh...memories.

The next part is "I know an old lady who swallowed a bird. How absurd to swallow a bird. She swallowed the bird to catch the spider..."

Next, anyone?

Believe it or not my favorite song as a kid was Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. But I was such a good little Catholic girl that I'd sing "...the baddest man in the whole bleep town."

That is so funny about your DH's "cool" websites. M is always calling for me to find things for him that are right in front of his face.

Anyway, I do know that she swallows a horse and she's dead of course. That is the best part of the book because I get to stop reading it.

Tell me about this Rhapsody thing. It sounds cool. You can just look up and play any song or what?

My favorite favorite kids song is:

Hush, little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna buy you a mockin'bird

If that mockin'bird don't sing
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring

If that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass

If that looking glass gets broke
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat

If that billy goat don't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and mule

If that cart and mule turn over
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover

If that dog named Rover won't bark
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart

If that Horse and Cart fall down,
Then you'll be the sweetest little baby in town

To the tune of Polly Wolly Doddle

Nobody likes me, everybody hates me
I'm gonna eat a worm
Big fat juicy ones, itty bitty skinny ones
My how they do squirm.

First you bite the head off
Then you suck the juice out
Then you throw the skin away
Nobody knows how I survive
on worms three times a day

My dad used to sing that one to us and I just googled it to get the words right and found out that there are many other verisons. :-)

I think I blocked out all childhood songs because my mom was such a bad singer. She tells me that when I was a baby she would sing to me to comfort me, but it would just make me scream louder. She still sings to me and I still scream.

I have no recollection. None. I remember songs from my brother and sister, maybe.

I remember I had this album - Snoopy versus the Red Baron, that I absolutely loved. It had a lot of silly songs like: " On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball, when somebody sneezed". And I think it had Puff the Magic Dragon, too.

My parents also sang me the coolest song when I was waking up, Time to Get up in the Morning. I think they totally made it up but I still remember it :)

What about the "Hole in the Bottom of the Sea" song? We used to sing that in school -- it's in the same genre as the "I know an old lady."

I love "Swinging on a Star" and "Marsie Doats"!

"Puff the Magic Dragon" and of course there was the other version - "Puff the Kosher Dragon."

Actually, I remember my mom having the Letterman 8 tracks and singing those songs...

But my 2 of my favorite memories, is my parents 78 of Sha Boom (I thought it was there wedding song) and my older brother teaching me "Henry the 8th"

This week I sang the fly song too for no reason. I haven't sang it in years. I was folding clothes and just said to myself "I know an old lady who swallowed a horse, she's dead of course." And then I was thinking about that song. That is WEIRD.

My sister and I used to sing Frère Jacques all the time. French daddy-o taught us that one.

Frère Jacques, Frère Jacques,
Dormez vous? Dormez vous?
Sonnez les matines, Sonnez les matines
Ding Ding Dong, Ding Ding Dong

There was an old lady who swallowed a cat...imagine that, she swallowed a cat...she swallowed the cat to catch the bird... (etc.)

lessee...when I was a kid I sang Puff the Magic Dragon and You Are My Sunshine...both of them are pretty depressing when you think about it...

But if you're thinking of lullabies for your own child...For T I sang The Ice Cream Song,(Sarah MacLaghlin) For Chicken I sang Clouds (Joni Mitchell), For Q I sing Sunshine (John Denver), and For Ladybug I sing Sweet Dreams (Patsy Kline) That last one is the song that I find myself humming at odd moments for no reason at all...
