The Tuesday Update

Okay, so I have found the time and motivation to write this week. I am feeling a little better because at this mornings weigh-in, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I lost 2.5 pounds! So that’s 3.5 in two weeks. Not earth shattering, but not bad either. Especially since I only got to the beach once this week, so only 4 miles this time. I have tried to pay a little extra attention to portion size this past week, trying to load up on the veggies and limit the starches. This is difficult because apparently my husband was Chinese in a former life, based on the amount of white rice he likes to consume. He also can not be convinced that corn and peas are high in starch, so when he makes them together with the aforementioned rice, (thinking he’s making a square meal) he can’t understand why I am annoyed. I know, I know, be grateful you have a husband that cooks…I’m trying over here.

I have a humongous sweet tooth, and I MUST have something sweet after dinner or I am not very happy. My mom, who we eat with a few days a week (remember my parents live on our street) bakes things out of boredom, and it has been hard to resist her homemade cupcakes and cookies. I’ve been good though, and when she says “Do you want dessert?” I have a hearty NO out of my mouth before she gets up from her chair. That, and a quick exit has helped. To alleviate my craving, I have a bag of milk chocolate chips in the fridge, and I give myself a tiny handful which seems to be doing the trick so far. BT keeps a close eye on me, so I don’t end up emptying the bag in one night. Other oddly satisfying desserts we have recently made are:

1. Graham Cracker Ice Cream Sandwiches – Put fat free C00l Whip in between two low-fat cinnamon graham crackers and freeze. Not a bad substitute for the real thing.

2. Juicy Ice Pops – buy one of the new fancy schmancy organic juice blends out there and make ice pops out of them. We have an ice pop mold that we love. The most recent flavor we made was Pomegranate Blueberry. (Be careful of brain freeze when feeding them to 8 month olds - funny to you, not so funny to them).

So tell me how you’ve been doing towards your health goals. And share a an easy low fat snack or dessert idea if you’ve got one.

There is a great recipe for Lo-Carb mini cheesecakes in the Protein Power book. Yes... I went on a Protein Power kick back in the day. But seriously, these little babies are good.

Congrats on the 3.5!

Great job!!!!! Keep up the hard work! I make lots of yummy stuff using stevia in place of sugar. One of my favorite treats is oatmeal cookies w/o sugar. Lately, I've been having the ultra-low cal treat of "lemonade" --water (sparkling or not) + fresh lemon + stevia.

3.5 pounds in two weeks is a great pace for weight loss. Good for you. I just hit my 50th pound lost and I'm so excited about it! Unfortunately, I still have a long way to go. (Sad, but true.)

I've got a sweet tooth, too. My stand-by treat is sugar-free vanilla pudding with Cool Whip lite folded in (kind of makes mouse-like consistency). Then fold in some sliced strawberries. It's yummy and really low-cal.

Walking right along with you (just posted about it too!)

My hubby loves Ben & J's Cherry Garcia and I just discovered that they make a lowfat yogurt version. Really very close to the original but much lower fat and cal count. They also have a chocolate fudge brownie low fat frozen yog. These are my current allowable sins!

Hm, sadly I'm like your mother and bake out of boredom. But now that I'm employed I can get the office chunky with me again ;-)

I'm also glad to hear that your husband also doesn't understand that peas and corn are starchy. Mine's a damn scientist by trade and didn't realize this. Grrr!

Good job! And I love the pom/blueberry juices - weird but good!

Oh, I'm so glad you're going to do the Tuesday updates. I have 4 weeks before my sister's wedding, and I just can't get motivated. My goal this week is to get to the gym at least 3 times -- 4 would be icing on the cake.
I love frozen choc. chips too. They're really good sprinkled on Dannon Low-fat Cherry-Vanilla yogurt. Almost as good as Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia -- almost. Actually I think the Cherry Garcia Frozen Yogurt is to die for, I actually like it better than the full fat version.
Funny, too, I just did a post about fattening food rituals, then I read yours.

....which to clarify is NOT about fattening food rituals, but rather the opposite.
And congrats on the scale movement in the right direction, BTW.

Congrats on the weight loss! See? It does work!

Are you telling me Peas and Corn with rice is the same as eating three loads of rice? Oh shitzen. I didn't know that, and here I was eating piles of peas and corn and thinking I was all healthy like... Doht!

No desert ideas, except, visit the Cheesecake Shop and get yourself one of those Jamaican Chocolate Cheesecakes, oooooh yum. Quick for sure, low fat, maybe not...

*waddles off to the fridge for a thick slice*

Hey, congratulations on the weight-loss. It's a start in the right direction. I also have a sweet tooth, we keep high quality dark chocolate in the fridge (green and blacks Maya gold is manna from heaven) and have a small serve of that after dinner as dessert. If husband is having ice-cream - he actually needs to put on weight I will have a teaspoonful straight from the tub and then that's it.

Mind you, I'm not actually losing any weight (I hate exercise) so take my advice for what it's worth...

Just yesterday I started running again (I said that like it was a regular occurence before...HA!). Will see how that goes.

I don't have a sweet tooth but I LOVE Coke and cannot tolerate diet pops. That is my downfall.

Good job on the 3.5 lbs!

Good job on the weight loss! I am failing miserably at my attempts. The vegies are here in the house, but they never find their way to my lips unless it's at dinner. Ugg.

Low fat dessert: non-fat yogurt (any flavor), frozen berries (any type), skim milk (not much, just enough so it'll all blend) and a touch of maple syrup to sweeten. Blend together and voila. Who needs ice cream when you have this concoction instead.

Way to go! You're off to a great start. Wish I could say I was joining you, but I think the scale at my house is broken. It only goes up. I've made a promise to myself to get it fixed.

I love the juicy ice pops idea. I think I'll head out to Trader Joe's and get some blueberry pomegranate juice today so I can make some.
